BSc (Psych), GDip (Psych), MSocWk, MClinPsych (Cand.), MAAPi
Umesh has over a decade of experience working in the mental health field across public and private sectors in Victoria and Queensland, as a registered psychologist and, prior to this, as a social worker. Born and raised in Nepal, he has called Australia his second home for almost two decades, completing all his university studies and professional training in both disciplines here.
Umesh recognises the importance of human connection and relationships. He believes that all people are unique, with differing life experiences, values and opinions, and that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect.
He has a special interest in working with clients aged 14 and above who have experienced trauma and associated conditions, such as anxiety and depression, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic self-harm and suicidal ideation, borderline personality disorder (BPD), body-image concerns, low self-esteem and interpersonal difficulties.
Therapeutic approach
Umesh has specialist experience with therapeutic interventions for both individuals and groups with diagnosed psychiatric disorders and mental health concerns. He uses a strength-based, compassionate, person-centred approach with unconditional positive regard. His style is intuitive and collaborative, and he values cultural diversity and each person’s unique background. He is bilingual and works from a cross-cultural, gender-affirming framework that is inclusive of gender and sexual diversity.
Umesh provides evidence-based treatments, using a combined approach that includes Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).
He has extensive experience providing psychotherapy to youth and adults in the general population, as well as first responders, with particular expertise in trauma-related conditions (including PTSD and complex PTSD) and other complex mental health difficulties. He has also led specialised group psychotherapy programs including CBT groups, DBT skills groups, ACT groups and trauma recovery programs for veterans and first responders.
Umesh offers psychotherapy in both English and Nepali (नेपाली) as Nepali-speaking psychologist supporting clients in the language they are most comfortable with.
